Jail Facility Overview in Hays County

Hays County has two major detention facilities with varying bed space capacities that house different groups of inmates. The primary and largest detention facility in Hays County is the Hays County Jail which is a 410-bed facility located at 1307 Uhland Road, San Marcos. This jail facility houses both adult male and female inmates awaiting trial, sentenced, or waiting for their release.

The other facility in Hays County is the Juvenile Detention Center located at 2250 Clovis Barker Road, San Marcos, Texas. The juvenile detention center is a 42,000 square foot pre- and post-adjudication secure correctional facility that is made up of 34 pre-adjudication (detention) beds and 114 post-adjudication (residential) beds for juveniles undergoing substance abuse, mental health, or sex offender therapy programs.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in Hays County Jail?

Concerned persons may send money to inmates incarcerated in the Hays County Jail through their personal Inmate Trust Fund accounts. These trust fund accounts can be funded through mailed money orders, online/phone deposits, or in person. Family, friends, and loved ones of inmates in the County jail may make in-person deposits for commissary and other purchases at the kiosk provided at the Hays County Law Enforcement Center’s lobby. The kiosk opens between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on weekdays(excluding holidays) and allows cash and credit/debit card deposits.

Interested persons may also fund an inmate’s account online via Accesscorrections, Walk-in Retailer, or Access Securepak websites. Money orders containing the inmate’s full name and Sheriff’s Personal Identification Number (SPIN) may also be mailed through the US mail to fund an inmate’s trust fund account. Money orders are to be received by 8:00 am on Mondays for them to be eligible for commissary deposits within the week.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

The Hays County Jail and the Juvenile Detention Center are the two jail facilities located in Hays County. The Juvenile Detention Center does not maintain a separate jail roster open to the public as access to juvenile inmate information is strictly restricted to parents of the inmates, attorneys, or law enforcement agencies. To obtain information about juveniles in the detention center, eligible persons may visit the facility during regular hours or call (512) 393-5220 for further inquiries.

For information regarding inmates incarcerated in the County jail, concerned persons may search the Jail Records section of the county records inquiry tool by defendant’s name or booking/release date. Interested persons may also visit the Sheriff’s office or county jail in person and/or call the designated phone lines for additional information.

Hays County Visitation Rules and Schedules

The Hays County Jail allows both on-site and off-site visits for inmates within the facility. On-site visits (20 minutes per session) are allowed twice a week and once daily while off-site visits (25 minutes per session) may be scheduled twice a day. Visits must be by appointments alone and must be scheduled at least one month prior to the visiting date.

To book an appointment for on-site visitation, interested persons may either call (512) 393-7366 during official hours or send an email to hays.visitation@co.hays.tx.us. Off-site visits may be scheduled via the Securus Video Visitation Website. On-site visits are typically scheduled on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays with late afternoon or evening visiting hours scheduled on Tuesdays whereas off-site visits typically fall between 7:30 am and 9:00pm on Sundays through Saturdays.

The county jail has outlined rules that guide both onsite and off-site visits. For on-site visits, the following rules apply:

  • Visitors under 17 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • All visitors must present a valid driver’s license or a state-issued ID card
  • No revealing, short, sleeveless, or see-through clothing with offensive language is allowed
  • Cameras, cellphones, handbags, or baby carriers are prohibited
  • A maximum of three persons is allowed per visit.

The rules for off-site visits include:

  • Visitors must be at least 17 years of age and must present a valid identification card
  • Tight-fitting, nude, or provocative dresses and clothes are prohibited
  • Visitors must not be under the influence of alcohol/drugs or display contraband items such as guns, gang symbols, or drug paraphernalia
  • Visitors are barred from taking pictures or recording inmates during audio visits
  • Underaged visitors must be supervised by an adult
  • Visitors must not share login details with unauthorized persons.

Mailing and Commissary Information

The Hays County Jail does not receive personal mail directly with the exception of legal mail, pre-approved publications, and money orders. All personal mail must be sent through the Securus Digital Mail Center where it will be approved, scanned, and available for inmates to view through the tablets or kiosks provided within the jail facility. The guidelines for sending personal mail are as follows:

  • Any item that cannot be scanned or does not meet any of the guidelines will be returned to the sender.
  • Envelopes containing mail must be properly addressed and include a return address.
  • Pictures and drawings will be accepted provided they are not Polaroids, do not exceed 4" x 6", and are not more than ten in number.
  • Paper documents must not be more than 8.5x 11 inches in size and must not have any write up at the back.
  • Mail containing contraband, pornography, or illicit content will be rejected.
